Laura Moriarty

September 23 - 26, 2024

I am very please to anounce that Laura Moriarty is returning to my studio to give a 4 day workshop in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Laura Moriarty makes process-driven works with pigmented beeswax whose forms, colors, textures and patterns result from processes similar to those that shape and reshape the earth. Her pieces have a feel of deep earth. Years of experience in encaustic, working with R&F workshops, numerous residencies and awards such as MARK 09 Award from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Working in sculpture, monotype, painting, writer; Laura has done it all. Laura’s techniques can take you to new levels and exploration in your processes.

WHAT A TREAT. Laura will bring her special handmade papers, kitakata, kozo, and more. Get to know their characters and how to incorporate these into your work. You will complete several works.

What to expect

This 4-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to explore a variety of papers and techniques that work very well in combination with encaustic. Through processes like monotype, lamination, and techniques for creating a range of textures, we will focus on the magical way different fibers absorb (or repel) the wax. We will also explore the interplay of mixed media, including sumi ink, charcoal, graphite, and more. Artists can work toward a cohesive series of works on paper, or can use this workshop as an experimental warm-up session and prepare interesting elements to use in Wayne Montecalvo's workshop which follows this workshop.

The studio will supply all you need for encaustic painting. Proper ventilation, heat guns, heated palettes, brushes, and paints.

Workshop Cost. $900
