A Bit About San Miguel de Allende

Spaniards first settled in the early 16th century, the settlement didn’t flourish. In 1555, the city was relocated to the current location a mile away. The economy boomed as nearby silver mines began to flourish. San Miguel became a popular trade center and a thriving community developed. The revolution against Spain began in Dolores Hildago, where Father Hidalgo gave the famous “Grita” for independence. He joined forces with Ignacio Allende in San Miguel and the war against Spain began in Queretaro. Today San Miguel is known for its important role in Mexican history. The town began to decline as the silver mines production slowed in the early 1900’s. In 1937, Sterling Dickinson (USA) and Peruvian painter Felipe Cossio del Pomar had an idea to create an artist colony and started the Bellas Artes school with a grant from the national government. Growth began and another school was created, Instituto Allende, housed in an old hacienda. Granted post WWII USA GI bill approval, these schools became popular. That idea of an artist colony caught on, coming to San Miguel to study art, immerge oneself in art is a common goal among many SMA residents from all parts of the world. I noticed around 15 years ago an influx of young Mexican families moving to SMA. They brought a new level of resturants, organic farms, and forward thnking ideas bringing a new level of Mexico to this interesting small town. San Miguel was voted by readers of Travel & Leisure magazine “Best Small City in the World” trice, 2017 ,2018, and 2022. Be inspired by your surroundings, MAKE ART IN SMA!
